Tesla Model 3 Highland: Everything That Changed
The 2024 Model 3 Highland refresh brought a new front end, improved range, ambient lighting, rear display, and more. Here's the complete breakdown.
What Is the Highland Refresh?
In late 2023, Tesla launched the "Highland" refresh for the Model 3 — the most significant update since the car's 2017 debut. Codenamed "Highland" during development, this mid-cycle refresh touches the exterior design, interior technology, ride quality, and efficiency.
Exterior Changes
The front fascia is completely redesigned with a sleeker, more integrated bumper and new headlight design. The rear also gets updated taillights with a continuous light bar.
Key exterior changes:
- Reshaped front bumper with flush-mount headlights
- New rear LED light bar connecting both taillights
- Reduced drag coefficient for improved efficiency
- New wheel designs across all trims
- Slimmer side mirrors with integrated turn signals
Interior Overhaul
The interior sees the biggest transformation:
New Rear Display
For the first time, the Model 3 gets an 8-inch rear passenger display, allowing backseat passengers to control climate, media, and entertainment independently.
Ambient Lighting
LED ambient lighting runs across the dashboard and door panels, with customizable colors — a feature previously only available on the Model S and X.
Improved Materials
- Perforated ventilated front seats (on select trims)
- New textile options across the lineup
- Redesigned center console with covered storage
- Quieter cabin with improved acoustic glass
Stalks Removed
Following the Model S/X approach, the Highland Model 3 removes the turn signal and gear stalks. Turn signals move to steering wheel buttons, and gear selection is handled via the touchscreen or auto-shift.
Performance & Range
The Highland refresh improved efficiency across the board:
| Spec | Pre-Highland (2023) | Highland (2024+) |
|---|---|---|
| LR Range | ~358 mi | ~363 mi |
| Rear motor | Permanent magnet | Permanent magnet (revised) |
| Cabin noise | Standard | Improved (acoustic glass) |
| Suspension | Standard | Retuned for comfort |
The range improvement comes from reduced drag, lighter wheels, and an updated rear motor design — not a larger battery.
Should You Buy the Highland?
If you're choosing between a pre-Highland and Highland Model 3, the refresh is worth the upgrade for:
- The rear display alone (especially for families)
- Ambient lighting and improved interior quality
- Better ride comfort from retuned suspension
- Slightly improved range
